Nail Art for Kids

Hi! My name is Emma and I'm 11 years old.  I love to do nail art with the Konad Stamping Nail Art kits my Mom and I sell at the OC Marketplace and on this website.  I've been doing my own nails (and my little sister's) since November and it's really easy.  Even my little sister can do it and she is only 6!

I am going to share some of my favorite designs and ideas with you so you can see how to do it on your own nails or on your friends' nails.  If you have any questions or ideas, my email address is emma@ocnailart.com.  To buy nail art supplies online (instead of at the OC Marketplace), just click here: Online Store

My favorite kit, and the one my Mom thinks is best for kids, is the "C" Kit (pictured at the right).  This kit is a great way to get started doing nail art and it comes with 2 really fun image disks which have 14 designs total.  I like these disks (M2 and M3) because the designs are smaller, which makes them easier to put on smaller nails.  I put the larger ones on my thumb or ring finger nail, and I put the others (or portions of the larger ones) on my other nails.  This kit also comes with 3 colors of the special stamping polish - red, white, and blue.  Of course, it also comes with a stamper and scraper.  The stamper that comes with this kit is the short stubby one - it's the easier stamper for kids to hold.  The scraper looks like a razor blade, but it isn't.

The stamper and scraper pictured at the left is the kind you can buy separately if you want to.  My Mom likes it because it addition to having the same size stamper as the one that comes with the C kit, it also has another end (the green end on top) that is smaller.  She says it makes it easier to put the images on our little nails.  She used it to put French tips on my little sister's nails and she said using the green stamper made it easier to line up properly.  I didn't really notice a difference, myself, but my Mom is old and needs reading glasses, so that's probably what the real problem is.  As I said before, the scraper looks like a razor blade, but it's really not even sharp.  It's just a metal straight edge.

The thingy pictured at the right is called an Image Plate Holder.  My Mom says it is the best $3.00 she has ever spent, but it was too late.  When we first got our Konad Stamping Nail Art Kits, my sister and I were trying it out on our dining room table, which is wood.  We scraped the polish off of the image plates and we accidentally got some on the dining room table.  I tried to get it off with nail polish remover before Mom saw it, but that didn't really work out very well for us.  Mom said the acetone removed the finish from the table and my sister and I were in trouble for a long time. Save yourself the trouble and buy this right away.  Note to self: don't use nail polish remover on wood.

The other kit I really like is the new Coraline Stamping Nail Art Kit.  It has 2 really fun image disks and three cool colors of special stamping nail polish: pearl blue, bright yellow, and hot pink.  I like this kit a lot, but the images are a little big.  We had to crop some of them down to get them on my little sister's nails, but we made it work.  I love the one of the cat and of the frog.  They are very cool.  The stamper and scraper are different from the other ones and they're easy to hold in my hand.  They are coming out with a bigger Coraline kit soon, but we don't have it yet. (UPDATE: MY MOM JUST GOT THE BIG CORALINE KIT IN STOCK - IT IS COOL!)

The small kit on the right is called the "S Kit".  It has only one image disk (M2) that has 7 designs on it, and one small white polish, along with the stubby stamper and scraper.  It's great for little nails and it is a good way to get started in stamping nail art.  My Mom bought these and put them in the goody bags at my 11th birthday party.  All the kids were happy and my Mom was happy, too, because all my friends wanted more image disks and more nail polish, so my Mom got lots of orders.  My best friend's Mom says my Mom is sneaky.  I don't think she's sneaky, I think she's pretty smart (for an older person).  I think there is no sense for you to buy the S kit, because you're going to find out that you love Stamping Nail Art and just buy more anyway. Might as well buy the C kit now.

The rhinestones on the left are an absolute must.  Each little packet comes with 50 stones - either pink, clear, or blue.  You NEED them to make really cool designs and they're easy to put on.  I use a toothpick to put them on.  First I put a dab of topcoat on my nail where I'm going to place the stone, then I dip the toothpick in the topcoat.  Then I pick up the stone with the toothpick (it sticks to the topcoat) and place it on my nail.  I shmoosh it down a little, then cover it with a layer of topcoat and it stays put.  Rhinestones are cool and I love them. You NEED all three colors.

People sometimes ask me which disks I like the best, so I'll just tell you here.  I like disk number M1 because it has some cute designs.  It has 2 butterflies that are small.  I also like M2 and M3 because they have smaller images as well.  I put the little "Hello Kitty" type design from disk M2 on my thumb.  I also like M10 because it has some fun images, but my favorite image is the paw prints.  I put them on my cell phone!  M21 has a paint splotch that I like to put on my thumb with a rhinestone in the center.  I like the rose on M25, the Hawaiian flower in the center of M26, and the seahorse and dolphin on M27. One of my favorites is on M28 - I stamp the skull and crossbones in black, then put a pink rhinestone in his eye - that's FUNKY CUTE. I also like the Hawaiian flower and pineapple on M29, but I love to do the palm tree and put rhinestones on it for coconuts.  M30 has some kid designs - the ladybug and the frog are my favorites.  M34 has a mermaid that I love.  I use the pixie from the center of M35 and I put a rhinestone in her hand - that's a very cute one.  I also like the sports disk, M52.  I do the soccer ball in blue and put a blue rhinestone in the middle - very cute! I love all of the "all-over design" disks like M57 (animal prints), M60, M61, M63, M64, and M65.  I pretty much like every disk. :)

One last thing....whatever you do, DO NOT paint your nails with the special stamping nail polish.  I tried it, because I like the pink pearl color.  My Mom was right - it DOES NOT DRY when you just paint it on your nails.  The stamping polish is goopy and thick.  I waited a long time, but it didn't dry like regular nail polish.  It dries instantly when you use it with the stamper, so I thought it would dry if I painted my nails with it.  Note to self:  listen to your mother.

I do nail art demonstrations at the Orange County Marketplace on the the weekends when we have our OC Nail Art Booth there.  People tell me it's cool that I help my Mom, but I tell them it's MY business and I just let her work there.  I tell them she's a slacker and that she's on a performance improvement plan and they laugh because I'm only 11.  They ask me where I learned to talk like that and I tell them from my Dad, because he's a really important business guy.  My Mom's not really a slacker, but it is fun to watch her turn red and sputter sometimes.  If you're ever at the Marketplace, come and find our booth and I'll put a design on your nail for free.  I'll even show you how to do stamping nail art - it is easy and fun.  I do it a lot and I never get bored.  If you want more information or ideas, just send me an email at emma@ocnailart.com.
